I can’t even... I saw an article on this saying great things, so I figured I’d give it a shot and brush up on my Japanese. I didn’t even get past the trial before being unimpressed. They are calling characters of the Hiragana alphabet words. Nope. They have bad annunciation of these characters so it can be hard to distinguish. They have some of the audio files attached to the wrong characters. It would say “re-れ” and then when you click it, it tells you it’s wrong and says “u-う” was correct. They look and sound nothing alike. They also have a neat feature where it’s like texting in another language. Neat until the app locks up and you have to manually close it and reboot to get it working again, only to figure out you’ve hit the limit of the free content of 14 “words” for the first stage. Have to pay for the rest.

Im studying Japanese, and if this app was about learning the sounds that make up words and learning to read hiragana, I’d give it five stars. I learned all the hiragana characters and knew how to read/write them within the first week. I had more difficulty remembering words and sentences. If they suggested little tricks and rhymes to remember words, that would help immensely. I also wish there was a feature that explains/helps you learn grammar. It’ll give you two words and then make it a sentence (example: dog, like. Then: I like dogs) but it doesn’t explain why or how the words are put together. Another feature that would be nice to have in the early levels is how to read katakana, hiragana, and kanji together, as most Japanese signs are written that way.

I’ve used Memrise on my Android since it came out and have never been disappointed. I wish some of the subscription features were a to try out and my we can gain free ones from learning and raising levels. I have been learning Spanish for about year and a half and it’s the best app for learning languages.

Whatever these guys did was brilliant. My wife is french so that helps hearing the language a lot but still! I impress her and her family with things I learn on here. I also just listen to random french lessons on Spotify. I have recommended Memrise to everyone I know. I’ve done Rosetta Stone and I hated it! Dualingo was annoying and I totally fell in love with Memrise.

I downloaded this app about 30 minutes ago. It caught my attention because today (January 17, 2018), Apple has it in the spotlight on their “Today” page in the App Store. It looked interesting, so I read the whole story on it. The description talks about this man (I forget his name, but the author of Memrise) and how he has an amazing memory and is able to remember this and remember that. It gave 5 specific examples of things, and I must say that it all looked great to me! So at the bottom of the sales pitch, there is a place for you to get the app for free. I tapped on “Get” and downloaded it into my iPad. Well, here is where things get weird. The app I downloaded is for learning a foreign language. There is NOTHING in this app that talks about how to improve your memory, remember people’s name, remember important dates, etc, etc....I played around with the app, which is NOT called “Memrise” but is instead called, “Memrise: Language Learning”. Say WHAT??? How are we supposed to know that this app is to learn a foreign language? There is no talk of it whatsoever in the description (I’m talking about the description on the “Today” page of the App Store from Saturday, January 13th). It tells us to “Master Your Memory” and use these five steps to remember things such as: 1) Divide and conquer, 2) Make connections, 3) Visualize, and more gobbledygook. The whole setup is to think you’re getting an app that helps with your memory, but when you tap on “Get”, you get this app that you’re in now....an app that teaches you Spanish, or French, or whatever. I do not understand the connection between “Master Your Memory” and “learn a foreign language”.It’s also the firs time I’ve even looked at the Home page.....now I won’t be coming back because it’s confusing and stupid,. My rating is three stars because I don’t know how to rate something like this., I thought I was getting “Master Your Memory” but instead I got ANOTHER language learning program. Ugh....;very confusing!!!
