  • My kids love Homer

such a wonderful reading program! I can't stress enough what a difference this made to my kids lives. They used to think reading was too hard, and Homer helped my kids change their minds. Now they love learning. They adore the Homer stories and phonics lessons, and I'm really proud of how well they're doing! My mother loves it too! When she visits, my son plays his recordings of himself reading the stories to her. She also has the free version Homer on her computer and they write letters to each all the time. I showed Homer to their teacher at school, and she said it's actually the only truly educational app worth getting, and she's already planning to use it in the fall in her classroom. TEN STARS! my only problem is that there are hundreds of books and my children have a hard time choosing what they want to learn about next. :)
  • Amazing customer service!

Not only is the app itself incredible, but the customer service team is, as well! We were/are experiencing a bug in the latest update, but this crew has been working incredibly hard to try and fix it, being extremely polite and helpful, and going above and beyond in service towards us. We always recommend this app to everyone we know, and we definitely will continue - even for the service alone!

The learn to read section of the app does a really nice job of introducing the building blocks of reading with fun games around each sound type. I feel good knowing this is educational and fun!

  • Free trial then monthly fee

You get 1 month free trial then it's 7.99 a month?! $96 a year for an app? No. I'd rather buy a leapfrog educational game for way less and lasts years and years.
  • No pickle dress up!

We got Homer because my daughter fell in love with the pickle dress up feature in her friend's app. She did many lessons to get pickles to decorate the wickle. Now that we got the first month free, the app does not have the dress up feature and now she's not motivated at all.
  • Decent.

As a reading specialist, I really see the value of kids hearing their own voices. However, I'm disappointed that there seems to be little differentiation between the ages and abilities of the kiddos I've used this with. So far I've tried it with a pre-K and a 1st grader whose abilities are different, but the content was the exact same. I'm going to try it now with an older more fluent reader, and see the adaptability for that student. I'm glad that there's a month long free trial for me to decks if it is worth the $8/month.

I don't like the monthly fee. It's not worth the money.
