Scribd has recently began limiting the number of books you can read each month with no explanation. Unlimited actually does not mean unlimited with this company. I am back to using Audible and Hoopla.

Even had books downloaded and the disappeared after I listened to two books.
  • NOT UNLIMITED

My rating is due to the lies. They advertise as “unlimited” but they are not. Even to go as far and say they’re “ Netflix but for books” LIES. NETFLIX DOES NOT MAKE TITLES UNAVAILABLE ONCE YOU WATCH A CERTAIN AMOUNT. This month I listened to 1 audiobook and I’m already restricted on many titles. I think the most is 3 then the library is EXTREMELY limited, and when I say limited I mean it’s only the crap that’s left. I’m frustrated because I never know how much I’m able to listen to and I get wary every time I’m almost finished with one. Also, it upsets me that I went in and gladly paid thinking it was unlimited. When I contacted support they gave me a bull answer about always rotating the library (but coincidentally they’re available when I pay again 🙄). I’d be different if I wasn’t pulled in with false advertising. Last month I’m paying.

Scribd is great and saved me more than the price of membership. I can preview and read books here and know whether or not they are worth purchasing. (I purchase mainly non-fiction.) Ditto with fiction. I am a fussy reader. I can skim through lots of books here at Scribd. When I find a keeper I like to purchase the physical copy. I love Scribd but a really good story is much better when I am curled up with its solid presence. So cool to have the best of e- and paper!

I’m an avid Scribd user and have been for a while. I’ve always had saved books and been listening to others while I wait. Now I have 2 saved books and one of the books is listed as no longer available on Scribd. So I go hunting for other books to listen to. I go to Paranormal Romance and scroll through.... I don’t consider Dostoyevsky, Aesop's Fables for Children or Balzac to be the norm in this Genre. Ok. So I go to historical romance, more of the same weirdness... I don’t think a treatise on the development of Australia is considered a historical romance unless you are just oddly in love with Australia and even then that’s a stretch. FIX IT!!!
  • Frustrating.

I knew I’d be limited. I read the way it works. I read other reviews. I did think I’d have a chance to listen to a couple first though, but no. I listened to about 1/3 of a book and then a few days later listened to a different book. That one took 3-4 days to finish. At that point, my options were already gone. Everything except children’s books are “available 4/13”. I’ll cancel and go back to wait lists with the library. I’m not paying money to only get to listen to 1.5 books a month.

I did the free trial and they continue to charge me after canceling. When I contacted support, they concluded there was no record of me ever having an account.
  • Absolutely must be online even to play downloaded material.

I’ve found that when trying to listen to audiobooks the app doesn’t acknowledge that you have downloaded it unless it’s connected. Also if you pay for unlimited they still limit how many you can get. The selections have been good. I’ve been able to listen to books that were not available from the libraries.
  • Great content, lousy reading experience.

So much screen real estate is wasted, no matter what device I use. iPad, Android phone, Nook tablet - can’t adjust the margins on any app and they are HUGE. Nook gets it right, Kindle gets it right, Libby gets it right, Kobo gets it right, Google Play Books gets it right, heck even Glose gets it right. Scribd drops the ball so badly in the reading experience department that it ruins the value of their service. For me. Cancelled my subscription, uninstalled.

I was super excited at the prospect of this app but I’m sad to say it has not delivered. After listening to ONE audiobook this month, every other audiobook I was interested immediately became unavailable. I would rather pay more for audible as they are at least upfront about the limited amount each customer can consume per month. They should try offering a higher rate for people that truly want the unlimited selection they claim to offer. Even five books a month would be preferable to the false claims. I had planned to recommend this to all my friends but I will be doing quite the opposite.
