    This app is on reliable, often not updated for the current issue. It repeats many articles so for example it will say there are 100 articles but in fact there are 70 they just repeat. This morning I can’t even get into the app. And they are in the media business!

    A complete redesign and now the thing doesn’t work at all. Says I’m in “offline mode”, even though all other apps can see the internet, then eventually gives up and suggests a restart. Which yields the same results. Jeeze. A couple of high school kids with a half-case of Jolt could probably rewrite this disaster overnight, but in the meantime I’m stuck.

    So, now the update to the Globe app, “completely redesigned”. Which means, what? The ability to go forward a page and now (wait for it) the ability to skip forward to the end of the paper? And we need that function at the top of every page? Crashes less? Wow. Yes, great; don’t call fixing what has been broken for a year “progress”, ok? The fundamental design flaw is the assumption that the most important function in the reader is presenting the simplified version of an article: if I just wanted plain-text, why wouldn’t I just read the web version? What I want, on an iPad, when I tap on article text is to zoom in on the text (and graphics, and page presentation). Why am I downloading a high-res rendering if you think all I want to do is see the web version of an article? Have you ever tried to pinch-open something while riding a bus? Or holding a device with one hand while using the other to hold on while on the Green Line? How about maybe I want a way - again, we’re talking about a facsimile edition - to follow a page one article inside the edition. Why isn’t there a way to tap the “Continued” text to get to that page? If I do want to share, or print, or read a simplified version, why can’t I do that with a long-tap? Why do I have to describe features that were in the App four years ago and somehow removed? All of these were functions that were disappeared. Why? And, finally, why isn’t there any intelligence in the app around combining hundreds of years of design, typography, and organizational knowledge into something that is “better” than what came before? I use the apps from NYT, The Post, and WSJ; they’re all good but I can’t believe the value of the page design just gets dropped on the floor. So dispiriting to get my hopes up that “new” might mean actually “improved”. Too bad we don’t have something like a “media lab” in the area to work on this. And, honestly, too bad for all that really good work that went into the “Web 2.0” website that now just seems to exist to “serve” advertising there occasionally interspersed with what used to be called news.

  • New version superb

    The new app that appeared in mid-August 2018 is hugely improved. It's now the best newspaper app that I'm aware of. In the past the Globe had two big advantages: it looked on the screen the way it does on paper, and the whole edition downloaded once, so that it could be read offline. But navigating the pages was often a chore, especially on my slower 3rd generation iPad. Somehow all those problems have been fixed. Now it's a breeze, easier than paper.

    I like the app except for the fact it constantly shows stories more than once. The 140ish articles that it says it has is probably 20 less than that if duped are counted. Seems like that would be an easy fix ?
  • Love the Globe...but

    This app fails on me about once a month. Then I reload, reset my password and have to wait for it to start working again. It also fails if I try to load it on more than one device...what a mess. I pay for a subscription that I can’t use. It’s almost like having an unreliable paper carrier, sometimes I get the paper, sometimes I don’t. With all the crappy reviews is the Boston Globe doing anything to fix this?

    How hard is it to provide paying customers with a product that works? After a year of complaints and negative comments, there have been no upgrades to what is truly one of the worst reading apps I have ever used. The pages don't size properly and have to be re-sized for each page. It is hard to get to different sections quickly. The automatic download feature doesn't seem to work. Even the manual download feature doesn’t work if the paper isn’t read immediately after downloading. All in all, I wonder if someone at the Globe has ever tried to actually read a paper on the app. I only wish I could give 0 stars and am so disappointed that this hasn’t been corrected after so much time.
