  • Best content. Worst technology.

The Economist continues to follow it's business model for its digital edition - best content, but worst technology. Improved from the past but still lots of problems. The font size almost always reverts to default size when going from one article to another on iPad or iPhone. Also, if you don't do a perfect 180 degree swipe you'll go to the next article rather than go down or up. I just tried to read an article while petting my cat. Not possible. I kept going to the next article because my downward motion using only one hand wasn't straight enough. None of the downloading problems of the past, but still definitely the most technologically challenged app of all the news sites I use.
  • Okay, but could be better

App is buggy. Sometimes won’t play when app is in the background. Should have a slider to set the playback speed instead of only a few options (0.5, 1.0, 1.5). Often very slow to respond if it hasn’t been opened in a while. Such a great source of news should have a better quality app.
  • No audio unless the app is open!!!

Seriously? If this doesn't get fixed soon, I'm canceling my subscription. I'm a big fan of you guys and everything you do. Been using the app for years. But come on... Also, can you PLEASE add a sleep timer to the audio. Every other audio app I use has that function.

Great content. Place retention is much better. Remaining problems: can’t expand graphs that are too small to read and font reverts to small frequently.

Enjoy the Audi part of the app. Kind of a pain because I have to re-download the issue after the app has been closed for any significant time.
  • Very poor app experience

Would you please do something to improve this app? First the audio cannot be controlled at will. I wish I can pause the audio at will but the control bar is normally hidden. I have to call out the buttons first. I don’t like this design. Secondly, the audio always stops when this app is running background. Why not giving me an option to play the audio background?
  • OK but Audio Experience Continues to Slide

I used to like the mixed media in the app but with the classic edition the audio quality went down, many more glitches in audio downloading, and the audio speed adjustment have have disappeared, been hidden, or stopped working at various points and speed controls are essential for me (iPhone 7, iOS 11.4). I have switched to the podcast version for consistent audio and speed adjustment functions. To set that up log in to theeconomist.com then use google to search for economist audio. Annoyingly on iPhone you must use the Apple podcast app to get the URL but you can then paste the url into any app. On the podcast I can’t: -Choose my play list on a weekly basis depending on time and interest. Technically possible but I would need to fetch a new URL from the sit every week. -Easily see the article title so if I have to flip to print versions, I can do so quickly. -I can’t see KALs cartoon.
  • Night Mode doesn’t work

Love the Economist. However this version of the app has a faulty night mode. Everytime you change articles I need to reset night mode. This is incredibly frustrating. Also when moving from article to article why can’t the app remember my previous location in an article. The old app could.
  • New version app is not as good as the older one

Following the app update recommendation, the new version of the Economists app stop playing unpredictably: when you pause and replay, the app sometimes does not respond, needs to reboot the tablet or cell-phone in order to solve this issue. Not as good as the older version!
