The Unarchiver is a small and easy to use program that can unarchive many different kinds of archive files. It will open common formats such as Zip, RAR (including v5), 7-zip, Tar, Gzip and Bzip2. It will also open many older formats, such as StuffIt, DiskDoubler, LZH, ARJ and ARC. It will even open other kinds of files, like ISO and BIN disc images, some Windows .EXE installers. The list is actually much longer - see the program homepage for the full list. The Unarchiver also tries to detect and correctly handle the filename encoding in the archives it opens, allowing you to open files from every part of the world without getting garbled filenames. The Unarchiver aims to be the only unarchiving program you will ever need, and to stay out of your way. Also, if you need to open archives on your iPad or iPhone, look for "Archives" on the App Store, or go to It is based on The Unarchiver, and lets you easily handle Archives on iOS!

  • Handles archives like a boss

I downloaded this app on a recommendation and kinda forgot about it. That is, until I downloaded a .7z file and it just... opened! Since then, I've used it to open plenty of 7zip, Stuffit, and RAR files without issue. It does its job and gets out of the way and that's exactly what it should do.
  • opened zip from 2005 that had problem

found old zip disk with a passworded zip file from 2005. Used built-in Mac zip in Finder to open - asked for pw - failed. tried to copy the file to my hdd. failed. installed this program - tried to unzip with it - asked for pw - opened, unzipped and 1 jpg had an error - I hit continue, it unzipped the remainder!!!

I use this on every one of my Macs. This can open basially any archive, even super old ones designed for old computers. Never had an issue with it at all. Love it!

I downloaded a large important work folder from OneDrive as a zip, and there was an error message from the native Mac OS unarchiver. I tried uploading it to some other clouds and got the same. I don't work with archive files much and I'd actually forgotten I had The Unarchiver. I saw it, figured it was worth a try, and it effortlessly extracted my files. Everything is there and intact. So many thanks <3

Pro: It sometimes worked on zip and other file types. Con: It’s never worked on any RAR file. None, zip, nada! ‘Extract any File’ works and had replaced this app on my computer.

  • Forced itself onto .ZIP files - BOO!

    By wchriste
I downloaded this app to open a .RAR file I received. As it turns out, Unarchiver forces itself to be the default on not just .RAR, but also .ZIP and other formats. I’m still trying to figure out how to fix this INSTEAD OF HANDLING THE FILE I DOWNLOADED THIS TO OPEN. Such a sleezy move by the app developers, but I guess you get what you pay for. I’m shocked that Apple permits this behavior in an app.
  • Great!

Great app! It was able to extract data from some corrupted zip files that the standard Mac archive utility wasn't able to open.
