  • I wanted it to work…

No matter how much effort I put into getting to know this platform with my new 2018 iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, I couldn’t get past the bugs and response times. First, the node tool rarely responds to new Apple Pencil. Every time I tried to move a node, the handles would shift, but not the node itself. Next, deselecting with the tap of my pencil failed over and over again. The selection tool itself is finicky. I go to move something and instead of moving, it grabs a path and throws things askew. Overall, between the lag and the app’s inability to follow instruction, I think this app is overrated. I’d rather draw in Procreate and trace in Illustrator. So much easier and far more enjoyable. Until the bugs are resolved, I won’t use this overpriced app again. - a disgruntled surface designer & illustrator via the crafts industry
  • Fix the text on path tool

    By isukwithnames
Amazing app. I use it on a regular basis for work My main issue with it is the text on path two is extremely annoying to use. I watched the official affinity tutorial on how to use it but that still doesnt help. Click on the inside and outside of my path for placement doesnt have the desired effect. I constantly have to fight with my text being the wrong way or upside down
  • Love this app so far!

I’m new to Affinity Designer and Photo and am very impressed with their capabilities. Best apps for iPad artists so far in my opinion. I have some experience in Adobe Photoshop but have been waiting for an alternative for quite a bit. And I’m sure I have found it in Affinity. I’m looking forward to to working with the Affinity programs as the company grows and develops new and innovative features that will help me grow as a artist/designer as well. There is something I think I would benefit greatly from though, and that is option of a 4d or “fisheye” lens grid. That would be an extremely big help, at least for my artistic needs. Other than that I have no complaints and am thoroughly enjoying Affinity products.

I have been a longtime Adobe Illustrator user and recently downloaded this app for iPad Pro in a search for a replacement. It was the first app I tried, and I have had a hard time convincing myself that continuing the search is a good idea. Of course the app has some limitations, and there is definitely a bit of a learning curve getting used to where things are and how they work. Once you get going, though, you’ll quickly realize that it’s an amazingly powerful app. I still shake my head in disbelief at its price. I have had one small glitch with placing an image crashing the app, but that’s not a deal breaker for me. The much bigger deal to me has been the clunkiness of some of the gestures. They seem to operate so smoothly in the tutorial videos, but when I use them myself node handles jump around and disappear, and I’m left unsure if I achieved the result I wanted. When trying to constrain size, other things happen, too. It’s a bit weird, but I’m hoping it’s an issue that will be resolved, or that it’s just part of the learning curve and I’ll get the hang of it. All-in-all, this app is super duper powerful for iPad Pro, and I highly recommend. I’m eager to try the Mac version when I upgrade my laptop in a few months, too. I think my search is over and Affinity Designer is my new go-to design tool.
  • Worth it but with some flawed basics

I haven’t used it extensively yet, so I’ll edit my review as necessary. I’m so glad there’s finally a decent vector program for iPad. I do think it is worth the money, and I will continue to use it, despite some pretty major frustrations. -Selection is appallingly imprecise. When I try to select a node or path somewhat close to another one, without fail the other one is selected. Zooming does not help in any way. I have a huge screen and am using an Apple Pencil, and this still happens. -I don’t expect desktop-level capability in an iPad app, but I’m pretty shocked there’s no rulers, or eraser in the vector persona. -There are some occasional glitches, like my guides just ... disappearing? And yes, I’ve made sure that they’re set to “visible”. That being said, it still does quite a bit, and despite the inconveniences, I’m pleased with it. Quite a few features are packed in there, and it has lots of potential. It takes some getting used to, but so does any program. Plus: No subscription!
  • On its way to perfect

So far so good. Clearly the best app for designers, by far. I’m still learning it ... but here’s some feedback based off my first experience. The bad: (1) There’s a flaw in the logic with creating brushes. If you create a new solid brush via the panel menu ... you set its setting, which for example is size ... and then you immediately start using the brush .. the size isn’t the size you just set, but instead is the size of the last previously used brush. This in it of its self is not a big deal per se ... the problem is ... the new brush NEVER retains its size value. So ... if it’s a 5px size brush ... you will never get that size. You can change the size in the contextual menu ... but that’s independent of what it’s natural size should be. ... ok ... you’re asking .. how can this be? Ok ... so, here is the work around. You need to open the settings of your new brush, and then click duplicate, and then ... the second new brush will retain its size value. Then delete the first brush. Ugh. (2) Where is the eraser tool for vectors? Seriously? Pixels mask? No. (3) Installing fonts can only be done one at a time. So, a family of 10 fonts would take like 5-10 minutes to install. (4) There’s something corky with the logic of when a new layer gets created after you deselect from a pixel layer. It’s like if you touch the screen then start painting it creates a new layer, but if you don’t touch after deselecting then it doesn’t. Umm ... could just be that I need to use the app more to get control of it. Maybe. (5) One click to unlock a layer but to lock it you need to search through a menu? Slows you down. The good: (1) It’s the best app out there. Yes, it’s not pure perfection ... but it’s light years ahead of anything else. 90% of its features no other app has. (2) The brush stabilizer is smooth as butter and is second nature to use. Nicely done. (3) Ability to work with text as outlines, just like in Illustrator is amazing. (4) Well integrated with cloud services. (5) Well worth $20, well worth 10x the price. All of the tools are rich in options. It’s everything you expect from a professional grade design app.

I wanted to love this app but after giving it a few tries I just can’t see myself using this over illustrator on desktop. The interface is so clunky and unintuitive. It’s cool that you can switch between vector and raster, but the raster tools are subpar compared to photoshop or Procreate.
