Not working on iPhone. Shuts down almost immediately
  • Supports only the most recent Garmin plotters

This app is nearly useless if you do not have the absolutely newest chart plotter. My 741xs is only 2 years old and it will not update the software or import charts from my chart plotter. Two of the most important functions of the app. It keeps asking me to register my product (741xs) even though I have several times. The only thing that works reasonably well is the helm portion of the app. Sad to see this happen to a fine product(Active Captain).
  • Useless garbage

Try to register my chartplotter 741xs. Active captain told me that device was discontinued and suggested to purchase charts for $48. Technician called and told me that Active Captain works only on computer. Such a nonsense. Time to switch to B&D. Instruments and chartplotter are far more superior. This is usual Garmin junk

So far this is the best product they have come out with.

After having Blue chart which was an excellent backup for my Garmin chart plotter now I have to buy a new Chart plotter that can talk to my IPad. I needed the blue chart since my 3400 dollar chart plotter could not use active captain. I can’t see how this mess they have made of Active Captain is in any way helpful. And the mapping costing more than twice as much is a nice touch.
  • Great potential when bugs get fixed

    By Eyes on the Green
I really like the design of the app, but it is extremely buggy and often slow. Among the problems I’ve seen so far: * contour lines inaccurate, showing some water areas in the color of land. The soundings are still there, but the color is wrong. This is the most serious issue. Only seeing it on iPad. Check Effingham Bay, Barkley Sound on Vancouver island for example. * app crashes on first run, then runs ok on second run. This happens on my iPhone but not the iPad. * current stations shown twice in the ring when tapped on * tide and current stations disappear on iPad * very long load time for current data (intermittent) * location services don’t work on iPad. Yes, it’s turned on for the app in iOS * long time to paint charts (intermittent) * downloaded charts vanish from iPhone and need to be redownloaded frequently. Not handy when navigating outside cell coverage areas. * this isn’t a bug, but I’m disappointed the integrated weather data went away versus the old BlueChart app. I also found that updating my chart plotter’s software obliterated the Canadian charts that were formerly built in. Not cool, especially since it turns out my 3-year-old plotter isn’t supported with ActiveCaptain, but I did go ahead and buy them again to get the latest. I can get over being duped into buying charts I already owned, but I’d really like to see the app quality improve to make it usable. I do use the app for its excellent features, but I frequently have to fall back on the old BlueChart app for reliability. Don’t give up please. You can make this a five star app with a focus on bug fixes and performance.

I am professional captain I move vessels from the US Virgin Islands to Maine. The Active Captain helps me know good places to stop and what’s available when I get there! It is a perfect planing tool as a captain. The Best Captain Fred

Garmin has some work to do on this one. Simply put it does not work. I have Garmin equipment and can’t even sync my waypoints from iPad to chart plotter. Not much in the way of support or instructions either. For example, does it sync both ways and if so how is priority determined. Totally frustrating. They should have hired Apple to write it for them.
  • Active Capitan!

This app has work flawlessly for me. I loaded it about a month ago and have been able to update software, and keep updated in my system by simply opening the app and tapping around. Super easy, super fast, super connected! Great job Garmin.
  • Port Sanilac Nice town

Spent 3 weeks in Port Sanilac having transmission work done. This town has basically everything needed to get by within walking distance. Grocery, laundry and hardware store.
