I have been a huge fan of Great Courses over the last 18 year and when they offered it on demand, online, all the time; I had to have it! It saves space in my house (we have quite a collection of the DVDs) but I can watch it anywhere! I am no longer tethered to my tv but now can continue to watch it every time I travel anywhere. It came with me to Denmark, England, Mexico, The Netherlands and the US with no interruptions or glitches. I cannot recommend it enough! Thank you Great Courses!

Learning is never over and each course brings knowledge and excitement, not to speak of the “ahah” moments. Great courses Plus is very enjoyable and can be your companion in your home or car. Very good gift to give to someone. Even though I never received the Amazon gift card they promised, I still recommend the courses. But, do not take their “gifts@ seriously!

We have been buying courses on CD and download for years now and finally decided to cancel our cable contract about a year ago. Due to our Great Courses subscription, have never looked back. We listen in the car and when doing chores around the house and it is awesome. So many different topics to choose from makes picking a course very easy. My recommendation is to stop killing brain cells with the dribble that networks call “entertainment” and expand your horizons with the Great Courses.

This app is great and functions well, apart from two issues: first, it does not allow audio-only downloads. Since I listen to courses primarily at work, where I have spotty cell reception, streaming isn’t an option, and since video stops playing if you exit the app or turn the screen off, I have to listen with my phone unlocked all day, which is not great for my battery life. Second, when I listen to the app it takes over the mini audio controller in the command center on my iPhone, even after I’ve started listening to music or podcasts. I have to restart the phone to get the correct audio source to display again. This also means that features like pausing without having to manually open and go into the appropriate app don’t work properly, whether I’m trying to do it from the lock screen, the command center, or headphone controls. Apart from those issues though, the app works very well, and I’m enjoying listening to lectures a lot.
  • Recommend this program to anyone.

I have listened to one complete course during the trial period. The content is very good but the app is lacking. 1. The app has not been updated for larger devices and is being upscaled. 2. I blew through my data plan! You can download video but not audio. When I’m in the car I switched to audio only format what isn’t downloaded. This forces you to leave your phone on using significant battery life. 3. When playing a lecture you cannot look at other content in the app. You are locked into the playing now screen. 4. One particular lecture session kept referring to a guide book. The app had no place to download or view this guide book. In general there seems to be a lack of written material to supplement the audio/video. Seriously though, the content is great!

Great courses but the app on my iPhone as well as other devices needs to be easier to use. It’s difficult to resume a course were you left of. Not as user friendly as Audible.
  • Needs some serious improvements

The content is great but the app is primitive. It does not support native resolution on iPhone 7 Plus, and audio downloads are not available. The player, for some reason, has to be in the front, making it impossible to listen why browsing the content. Barely usable.

I am a Molecular Neuroscience major at Loyola University Chicago and downloaded “Understanding the Brain” by Dr. Jeanette Norden and I am truly amazed by the amount of details in each lecture and also the graphical animations, which help simplify what she is lecturing about. In addition, there are multiple real life examples that we did not had the time to covered in my previous Neuroscience class at Loyola. This is amazing because now you have the opportunity to learn about specific subject, anywhere with or without an internet connection, and if you don’t understand a subject well enough, you can always go back to better consolidate it. I love it and can’t wait to finish this course and begin another one. Thanks to whoever thought of this idea. I used to buy courses on dvd from the Great Courses but this allows access to courses instantly. I love it!
  • Great content, but app needs some basic features.

I’ve had this app on all my devices for almost a year now. I love learning new things, and I really like not having to worry about exams or homework. I first saw a lecture by the Great Courses on Netflix. The lectures where by Niel DeGrass Tyson, one of my favorite professors. The format caught my attention, and I decided to look up the company. I found this app and immediately downloaded it. The app on mobile devices is pretty good, but just needs a bit more cosmetic touches because it looks a bit old. On the other hand the Apple TV app looks aesthetically pleasing but lacks features. I often turn on a lecture after a long day to sit down and relax, and more often then not I end up falling asleep. When I wake up I want to resume the lecture, but the player does not have the ability to scrub through and resume where I left off, or at least where I remember leaving off. Then when it gets to a lecture that was playing when I woke up, it doesn’t let me restart the lecture from the beginning. It will always start from the point I stopped the lecture last time. No matter what I do. I have to completely finish watching it in order to restart a specific lecture. The lack of this feature is what makes this app so frustrating. Sometimes I just want to go back and listen to a specific part of a lecture, but without the ability to scrub through a video and find the spot you want to see it makes this app seem very unplanned. Over all I gave it a four out of five because of content. If it was based on the Apple TV app and it’s features this app would only be a one out of five, maybe two.
